While I spend a lot of time puzzling out my anthropological data, I did, until a sudden worsening of the symptoms of Parkinson's in 2015, take long hikes. 25 to 30 kilometers on a sunny day were just about right to get rid of the cobwebs in my head. Of course, a little notebook was always at hand, because while hiking and relaxing I often got a flash of insight that solved a current problem. I started hiking in 1987 when my mother asked me if I'd like to 'take a little walk' with her, and we did some 20 kilometers! I got the 'bug' and continued doing it ever since. The last few years I helped develop and lay out hiking routes, much appreciated by all as volunteers are always hard to find.

The 20 km hike in Diekirch, in Luxembourg, is one of my favorites. A cold beer afterwards is wonderful as well!

Since 2005 my hiking has slowed down somewhat after I injured my right leg, which has intermittently given me problems ever since. This did not stop me from going to Seefeld (Austria) in 2008 though. As you can see, this is a wonderful place to hike and enjoy the scenery - and have a cold beer afterward:
